Skin problems can leave you with a feeling of embarrassment and frustration. People spend hours agonizing over their problematic skin and end up splurging on costly cosmetic products. This obsession with skin has encouraged hundreds of cosmetic companies to launch new product lines each claiming to give you the flawless and unblemished skin of your dreams. Most of these companies play on your insecurities to sell their stuff and make rosy profits. Does this stuff really work? Like everything else, the views are divided from “wow, this thing works wonders for my skin” to “this stuff does nothing for me.”

If you’ve tried everything and nothing works maybe it’s time to get back to basics and use grandma’s tips on skin care. Here are some home skin care tips you can use to get glowing radiant skin.

Drink at least 2 liters of water every day. Water flushes out the toxins and keeps the skin looking healthy and lustrous. Consume a liter of water as soon as you wake up and then continue sipping water throughout the day at regular intervals. If you exercise, you may need to drink up some more to prevent dehydration.

Avoid touching your face as much as possible. You may feel like poking, tweaking or squeezing a spot each time one appears on your face. Quell this impulse at all costs since messing about with your spot may cause scarring and the infection may spread to the rest of your face.

Whenever you venture into the sunlight especially between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00p.m, make sure that you’re adequately protected with sunscreen. Harsh sun rays are responsible for freckles and are the main cause of premature aging of the skin. Any anti-aging skin care tips that you come across will always advise you to never step out during the day without sunscreen.

No matter what your skin type is, wash your face at least twice a day with a mild face-wash. Avoid using soap on your skin as it strips your skin of natural oils and causes dryness. If you have oily skin, it may aggravate the problem. You can splash water on your face as many times as you like to keep your skin looking fresh.

Stress is the root cause of many skin problems. You’ll notice that you tend to break out more when you’re all stressed out. Since stress is inevitable, you can condition yourself to manage it better by practicing relaxation techniques like yoga and meditation.

While providing tips on skin care, a good night’s sleep can definitely not be ruled out. Get at least 8 hours of sleep per day. When you sleep, your body is relaxed and gets the chance to create new skin cells and get rid of dead ones. Your skin automatically looks rested and fresh after you enjoy a good night’s sleep. If you keep late nights, you’ll notice those shadows under your eyes. So get adequate rest and sleep.  They don’t call it “beauty sleep” for nothing.

Grandma’s home skin care tips may not have included exercise but if you want to get that blood pumping and circulating, exercise regularly. Aerobic activity increases blood circulation to your face and gives you a rosy complexion.

Most free skin care tips will list bad food choices as a major cause of skin issues. While nobody is certain about the extent of damage caused by junk food, it’s certain that excessive consumption of fried or processed food can cause havoc with your skin. So refrain from indulging in those fries and cheesy burgers no matter how tempting. Cut down on aerated drinks and instead consume fresh fruit juices.

Last but not the least follow your instincts in selecting skin care products because you know what best works for your skin. Don’t blindly pile on the moisturizer or that new lotion just because your friend swears by it. Make sure that it suits your skin texture and avoid experimenting too much with cosmetics. Thoroughly remove all your makeup including eye makeup before you go to bed.

No matter what type of skin you possess whether oily, dry, normal or combination, these tips on skin care will pave the way for a more youthful and luminous skin tone.
